I feel connected with what the company does. Firstly, it is due to the fact that since young, I liked Fighter planes, and in Secondary school, I learned about optics and how light travels, and this is one of my best topics. Thus, I feel that it is a combination of my interests and my best topic for science, and I would really want to know how photonics can be applied in Defense and Aerospace. Other than that, as one of my hobbies is photography, and knowing that Qioptiq does offer high quality lenses, I am really eager to see how these lenses are constructed.
Before this, I have never heard of Qioptiq, but after reading up, I feel that Qioptiq is a company which manufactures professional equipment for lab use to medical uses and defense and aerospace uses. Thus, Qioptiq gives me the impression of a very huge company with many professionals working in it.
I feel that the science principles that I have learned from class is being implemented at Qioptiq. One of them would be "total internal reflection", used in endoscopy, as well as reflection of light in dental imaging. Another interesting principle is the properties of lenses, and this is used in photography and cinematography, as well as in projection appliances.

This video has allowed me to understand what are photonics. Through this video, I am deeply impressed with Qioptiq. Previously, I felt that current optical fibers were already the best and optics companies would only have to manufacture according to the same process. However, now I know that Qioptiq not just follows current technologies, they also produce and research different kinds of photonics to produce high class standard products.
Previously, I used to take high grade equipment for granted, when I had endoscopy, I felt that it was just nothing but a tube. Now that I know how closely related engineering is to many equipments, I am really eager to see how it is done at Qioptiq.
I would hope to see many photonic equipments being used, or created during this learning journey. This can leave me with new knowledge on exactly how photonics can be applied in many appliances.
Next, I would like to share my reflections with 3M.
I think 3M is a great company, mainly because my family has loads of 3M hangars that we use to hang our clothes. I am impressed by 3M's innovative skills, where they are able to think of a simple invention which allows many households to counter the problem of tearing some paints on the walls when taking off small hangars. Even though it is a small problem, 3M is able to recognize it, and solve it. This goes to show that 3M does not overlook any slight problems or mistake, and it gives me the impression of a very reliable and innovative company.
This video of a flexible and transparent touch screen concept further wows me with the creative ideas came up by 3M. Of course, whether it can become a reality is a different thing, but we have to remember that in the past, electrical lights were just a dream. These ideas may seem as an impossibility now, but as technology advances, we have to continue dreaming and coming up with innovative and creative ideas that benefit us by providing convenience.
Previously, I thought 3M was a company which mostly manufactured adhesive products, as well as reading lights. I have now learned that 3M is involved in almost all parts of our daily life, even the dental fillings that we may have. I feel that 3M is a great company which improves people's lives through innovation.
I would hope to be able to learn more about what is innovation. Many of us think that innovation is just coming up with something new. However, I feel that at 3M, innovation takes on a totally different meaning, and I would really like to find out how it is like at 3M.
